Hi there, the 3/5th compromise was not an effort to put blacks down, it was the first step in setting them free. Let me explain why.

The North had a higher population, the South wanted slaves to count as full representation for apportionment in the House of Representatives. The North said that if you want them to count you must make them voting citizens with full human rights. The South refused so they came up with the 3/5th compromise. This lessened the South’s power in the House of Representatives and since the North had the power they started working to chip away at slavery as an institution almost right away.

Most people don’t know this because schools are lousy, but that is why it came to be.
