If you’ve never had a green smoothie before out of fear that it’ll taste like, well, like someone added a bunch of spinach to your smoothie, have I got a recipe for you. I made this for my boyfriend’s mom, who likes healthy food but isn’t familiar with the green smoothie trend, and she declared that it tasted just like a chocolate-covered banana.
“Really?!” I exclaimed. “Maybe I could call it a banana split smoothie! Because I also add almonds, strawberries, and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It’s almost like a banana split milkshake!”
“Umm,” she responded. Okay, okay, fair enough. It’s not exactly a sundae or milkshake, and calling it so definitely raises expectations for what is, at its essence, a smoothie with a bunch of spinach thrown in. But with the delicious flavor dominance of ripe banana and unsweetened cocoa powder, plus the rich, roasted almond butter, you can almost trick your taste buds into thinking you’re sipping on pure decadence rather than this super-healthy meal-in-a-glass.
Nutty Chocolate Monkey Green Smoothie
1 1/2 cups frozen spinach
4 strawberries, chopped
1.5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
3 tablespoons natural almond butter
Throw all ingredients into a blender and blend on high until it becomes a smoothie. Taste and adjust ingredients as desired (throwing in a little extra cocoa powder or almond butter, adding more almond milk, etc.). Pour it into a glass and sip away!
